    Compassion assisted children in Urabá, Colombia who were affected by heavy rains in September are recovering.

    A total of 10 Compassion assisted children from one of our local church partners were affected.

    Assessment is complete following heavy rains that affected RW0179 and their children in September. Families whose homes were damaged continue to stay in one covered room while awaiting repairs. Thankfully, there have been no additional heavy rains in this area.

    The Compassion Rwanda field office plans to help with home and classroom repairs, using reimbursable disaster funds.

    Our local partners in Bangladesh have finished assessing the impact to children from heavy rains, flooding and landslides over the last three months.

    A total of 23 of our local partners and 2561 Compassion assisted children have been affected.

    The Compassion Bangladesh field office has submitted several funding requests to support relief and rehabilitation efforts. Relief items provided include food and safe drinking water.

    Rehabilitation activities include long-term solutions for safe drinking water, as well as building repair and reconstruction for our local partners.

    Recovery is ongoing and additional funding requests may surface as needs are evaluated and balanced with local resources.

    Areas around Bali, Indonesia are still under alert due to the volcanic activity of Mount Agung. However, evacuees within the safe zone have been allowed to return home. The government and nearby residents continue to monitor the situation.

    The Compassion Dominican Republic field office and local church partners in the Dominican Republic have finished assessing the impact of Hurricane Maria.

    Two of our church partners and 473 Compassion assisted children have been affected.

    All affected children and their families have received provision for immediate needs. The Compassion Dominican Republic field office also hopes to support repair efforts and provide household items, such as mattresses, stoves, gas cylinders, to families who lost them in the storm.

    All Compassion assisted children from RW0344 have been accounted for following strong winds and heavy rains that hit the area at the end of September. Classrooms have been repaired, and programming has resumed.

    In total, one of our church partners and four Compassion assisted children were affected.

    The Compassion Rwanda field office will provide reimbursable disaster funds to support minor repairs to children's homes and the local church partner office and latrines.

  • Conjunctivitis Outbreak: Honduras

    Conjunctivitis Outbreak: Honduras 14 Oct, 2017

    An outbreak of severe conjunctivitis has been reported across several departments in Honduras. At the end of September, the Secretary of Health sent an official communication, stating there were 30,000 cases of the highly contagious eye infection, and they expect this number to increase. Our local church partners in the northern and central parts of the country have been impacted by the outbreak.

    250 Compassion assisted children from 15 local church partners have been affected.

    Church partner staff at 11 of our local partners have also been affected.

    Our local church partners and the Compassion Honduras field office have taken necessary precautions to reduce the risk to children not yet affected. The Compassion Honduras health specialist has provided technical support to our local church partners to ensure children receive the care they need.

    In most cases, public health centers are providing children with the medication and treatment they need at no cost. For the rest, the Compassion Honduras field office is covering the cost through medical funds.

    Our local church partners continue to assess the impact of Tropical Storm Nate on children in Nicaragua. The Compassion Nicaragua field staff are also visiting the affected areas.

    Families in Bangladesh affected by heavy rains that began in June are finding a sense of normalcy again. Only light rains are falling occasionally now. Children are going to school, and families are returning to their homes. Some children whose homes were destroyed, have been able to borrow resources to rebuild, while others who could not afford loans are still living in rundown houses.

    Twenty-three of our local partners and 2561 Compassion assisted children have been affected.

    Compassion Bangladesh has requested further funding to support ongoing recovery efforts.

    Second Earthquake: Mexico (Crisis Update) 13 Oct, 2017

    Local government authorities in and around Mexico City require that all public buildings damaged in the earthquake, including churches, schools, offices, must be reviewed by the civil protection authorities with a priority on schools and government buildings.

    Only one of our church partner buildings has been assessed so far and was deemed safe: ME0795. They have returned to normal activities.

    Four of our local church partners have been affected. No Compassion assisted children have been affected.

    Heavy rains intensified by Tropical Storm Nate have caused flooding in many areas of Honduras. Nationwide, authorities have reported over 1000 people affected.

    The Compassion Honduras field office estimates that at least 50 Compassion assisted children are affected.

    Further details on the impact to Compassion assisted children and our local church partners are not currently available at this time.

    Our local church partners are providing temporary shelter, food, water, mattresses, clothes, school supplies and other assistance to Compassion assisted children and their families through reimbursable disaster funds.

    Continued rains in Nicaragua are posing a challenge to the recovery of children and families affected by Tropical Storm Nate.

    The affected children are receiving initial aid including food, plastic and blankets. The Compassion Nicaragua field office is also requesting support to help children suffering from respiratory issues as a result of the rains.

    Heavy rains that recently flooded Montería continue to cause issues for people in the area. The rains have dampened firewood, making it difficult for some families to cook, and several children, as well as our local church partner staff have eye infections. Stagnant water is also causing increased mosquitos and a bad smell in the community.

    A total of 104 Compassion assisted children have currently been affected by the flooding.

    In August, heavy rains in Sri Lanka caused the septic tank at LK0209 to collapse, making the washrooms unusable.

    Several Compassion assisted children also had damage to their homes.

    At this time, repairs are almost complete and children are attending normal activities.

    Tropical Storm Nate: Nicaragua 07 Oct, 2017

    Tropical Storm Nate hit the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua yesterday, causing heavy rains, flooding and landslides in some areas.

    The government issued an alert, suspending preschool, elementary and high school classes throughout the country.

    Our local church partners were encouraged to follow the government’s guidance. The storm has moved on, but heavy rains continue and some areas are without electricity.

  • Second Earthquake: Mexico (Crisis Update)

    Second Earthquake: Mexico (Crisis Update) 06 Oct, 2017

    The damage to Mexico City and neighbouring states is severe. Thankfully, there are no reports of injuries among Compassion staff or children at this time.

    Some of our local church partners in central Mexico are still undergoing professional assessment of their structure’s safety. The Compassion Mexico field office is working normally, and staff have met a few times to share and pray as they continue to recover emotionally from their experiences during the quake and subsequent aftershocks. One building collapsed just a few blocks from the field office, and many staff live in areas where there is a lot of damage.

    Four local church partners have been affected. No Compassion assisted children have been affected.

    ME0738 and their children were originally impacted by the first earthquake that affected Chiapas and Oaxaca states. They felt the second earthquake and thus, reported impact from that disaster also. However, after discussion with Compassion Mexico field staff, they have decided they were unaffected by this second quake.

    Earthquake: Mexico (Crisis Update) 05 Oct, 2017

    Many people affected by the 8.2 magnitude earthquake in early September are staying in tents outside because they either lost their homes or are afraid to stay inside a building.

    Over 6,000 aftershocks have occurred and tremors continue, causing increased damage and anxiety for families. People have not returned to normal activities, children are not attending school and economic impact has led to increased unemployment.

    Currently, 23 local church partners and 2762 Compassion assisted children have been affected.

    Efforts are underway to alleviate the needs of families in the damaged areas of Juchitán, Tonalá, Miraflores and surrounding areas.

    The Compassion Mexico office is seeking additional disaster funding to support children and families with relief efforts, including food, health and hygiene assistance, temporary shelter and trauma recovery.

  • Strong Winds: Rwanda

    Strong Winds: Rwanda 04 Oct, 2017

    Last week, a storm carrying strong winds, rain and lightning affected the Rwamagana district of Rwanda. Lightning struck the latrines at RW0344, and winds destroyed the church building, as well as nine classrooms and the local church building.

    Compassion assisted children are believed to be affected, but no details are currently available.

    Our local church partner has begun repairing classroom roofs through reimbursable disaster funds, and hope to resume activities soon. They have also requested support to repair the office and latrines.

    The local government is providing labour to help perform repairs, and they are also planting trees to help mitigate the effects of heavy rains in this area.

    Please pray that repairs would go quickly and smoothly, so children can attend programming at the church again. Compassion Rwanda also requests prayer for God’s protection over all their children during this rainy season, which has been more destructive than usual.

    Heavy rains fell in western Rwanda two weeks ago, affecting the Bweyeye sector of Rusizi District. Strong winds accompanied the rain and tore roofs off several homes and classrooms at RW0179.

    One of our local church partners and eight Compassion assisted children have been affected.

    The Compassion Rwanda field office is supporting families with reimbursable disaster funds to repair their homes. Until repairs can be made, several families are staying in one covered room of their homes or using temporary materials as a makeshift roof.

    Church partners in the Dominican Republic continue to assess and support the needs of children and families affected by Hurricane Maria.

    One church partner and 473 Compassion assisted children have been affected.

    As a precautionary measure prior to the hurricane's arrival, staff from DR0306 moved children and their families from high-risk areas to temporary shelters. Their homes are near a river that often overflows after heavy rains. Thankfully, the river did not overflow and most of these families returned to their homes unaffected.

    TH0918 has finished impact assessment from the recent flooding. We recently discovered that the missing child, whose mother passed away, also sadly passed away.

    A total of 99 Compassion assisted children were affected by this flooding.

    Children and their families continue to receive support from the joint efforts of TH0918 and local authorities.

    Please pray for the family grieving the loss of a caregiver and a child.

    Last Saturday, the community of Montería, Colombia experienced the effects of heavy rain again. This time the rains caused flooding in the neighbourhoods around CO0621.

    The Compassion Colombia field office estimates that around 100 Compassion assisted children are affected, as well as the pastor and a few staff at CO0621.
